Arrests Overshadowed Political Power Struggle

U.S. Marine and Russian Dissident Disappear in Russia

WEB Paul Whelan, a Canadian-born former U.S. Marine with U.S., British, Irish, and Canadian citizenship, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian-British dissident, both jailed in Russia, have disappeared from view. The disappearance of these high-profile prisoners comes amid an escalation of political tensions between Russia and Western countries.

WEB Whelan, who has been declared wrongfully detained by the U.S. State Department, was arrested in Moscow in December 2018 and accused of espionage. Kara-Murza, a leading opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been arrested multiple times and has been the target of several poisoning attempts.

The disappearance of Whelan and Kara-Murza has raised concerns about the safety of political prisoners in Russia and has further heightened tensions between Russia and the West.
